Come il mito di Babbo Natale sia arrivato a fare della Finlandia la sua casa, davvero non so spiegarlo.
Certamente l’atmosfera invernale della Lapponia, può essere uno scenario fiabesco che ben si presta a fare da cornice ad un personaggio quale è Santa Claus. Santa Claus, appunto.
Senza perdere di vista questo nome, San Nicola, sto per far torto ai nostri amici Finlandesi, come pure a tutti i bambini che, in questo momento, lo immaginano circondato dagli elfi mentre organizzano i pacchetti da consegnare la notte di Natale
Quel che so è che nel 1823, Clement Clarke Moor con la sua poesia “La visita di San Nicola”, ha dato al Santo renne e slitta,.
Thomas Nast, nel 1863, lo disegna come un anziano paffuto, barbuto e in pelliccia.
Haddon Sundblom, nel 1931, lo veste di rosso finché la Coca Cola diffonde nel mondo la nuova immagine del Santo.
San Nicola e la città di Bari
In realtà San Nicola, moltissimi anni fa, era un vescovo nato in Turchia intorno al 257 dopo Cristo, in un’epoca in cui la situazione economica e politica non era certo stabile. Il Santo si distinse per la sua guida pastorale, per la sua bontà e per le opere miracolose.
La leggenda racconta che avesse donato 3 sacchetti di monete a tre fanciulle, per salvarle dalla povertà.
Pur di restare anonimo, il terzo sacchetto lo lasciò cadere giù dal camino.
Le sue reliquie, rimaste a Myra (in Turchia) fino al 1087, giunsero nel capoluogo pugliese grazie a 62 marinai baresi.
A Bari, molti hanno il nome di Nicola.
Perfino lo stadio si chiama “Stadio di San Nicola”.
In giro per le vie di Bari Vecchia, splendidamente tenuta dai suoi abitanti, troverete numerose edicole, tra cui quelle raffiguranti il Santo.
I Baresi poi, non sono gli unici a venerarlo.
La cripta della Basilica, dove si conservano le reliquie, si riempie, soprattutto in occasione delle festività in cui lo si celebra (il 6 dicembre e il 9 maggio) di fedeli ortodossi che arrivano dalla lontana Russia (di cui il Santo è patrono).
Pregare lo stesso Santo insieme a loro dà una meravigliosa sensazione di vicinanza all’altro, come se San Nicola ci avesse donato, per prima cosa, un ponte che tiene uniti Oriente e Occidente.
Non stupitevi, dunque, se vi dico che in molti credono che Babbo Natale sia a Bari.
Babbo Natale ha origini turche, è venerato in tutto il mondo, ha un forte legame con la città di Bari, dove la sua presenza è reale, ed è atteso dai bambini nella notte di Natale.

Certainly the winter atmosphere of Lapland, can be a fairy tale and a good frame to a character like Santa Claus.
Without losing sight of the name, St. Nicholas, I’m doing an injustice to our Finnish friends, as well as to all children who, at this moment, imagine him surrounded by elves while he’s organizing packages to be delivered on Christmas Eve.

San Nicola and Bari

Legend has it that he had donated three bags of coins to three maidens, to save them from poverty, dropping the third, to maintain anonymity, down the chimney.
For a variety of circumstances, then, the relics of St. Nicholas, remained in Myra (Turkey) up to 1087, and so, at the hands of 62 sailors (from Bari), they were taken to Bari, where it is still revered as patron of the city.
In Bari, many people have the name of Nicholas.
Even the stadium has his name.
In the streets of Old Bari, beautifully kept by its inhabitants, you will find several kiosks, including those depicting the Saint. People of Bari, then, are not the only ones to worship him.
The crypt of the church, in which the relics are preserved, is filled, also of Orthodox faithful who come even from distant Russia (the Saint is the their patron ), especially during the holidays in which he is celebrated (6 December and 9 May).
While I prayed with them, I felt a wonderful feeling of closeness to the other, as if St. Nicholas had given, first, a bridge that unites East and West.
Don’t be surprised, then, if I tell you that many people believe that Santa Claus is in Bari.
